Competing with a website that has sitelinks

For some of the keywords we target, we are #2 on Google after a website that has sitelinks. The keywords do not match their website or company name. I assume they just have enough links using that keyword phrase.

Do you think a website with sitelinks usually has a pretty firm grasp on #1? Or is it still fairly easy to beat such a website? Does anyone have experience of outranking a website that had sitelinks?

I'm trying to decide if I should keep building links for those keywords or simply focus more on keywords whose rankings can be improved upon easier.

    Thanks.

In my experience a combination of the 2 is the way to go, keep getting that new content on your site, targeting your keywords and keep working on your relevant back links, keep in mind the person at #1 is probably doing the same thing so sometimes it is hard to get there even if you are doing the hard work

Sitelinks is for sites who have a strong #1 SERPS for a long period of time as far as I could see in past years. This also may be an older site having started earlier than you and published / submitted more than you.

Since only one single site can have sitelinks - be happy to be #2 and may be one day you get sitelinks in another keyword combination where you have been top for years.

Finally it is NOT the sitelinks that bring you traffic but the site relevancy compared to a particular search. ONly few visitors normally may come thru that one keyword combination resulting in sitelinks. There are MANY THOUSANDS of keywords resulting generic traffic. Hence to have many top 10 SERPS across the full spectrum of your entire niche is more important for your success than sitelinks.

Keep on publishing LOTS of excellent content and get as many pages into top 10 SERPS in Google and any other SE as well. In ten yxears from now all may look different in your world.

It would be in my humble opinion that you should leave what you have achieved already. Don't over do the anchor or it may result in the opposite effect. Number 2 is an achievement, it has been proven that surfers will not automatically click the first result anyway.

I think its time to concentrate on other keywords now.....

Its possible because we have website that has sitelinks and another website beat us for being number one on our primary keyword. So it is possible.

JeddahBikers had point out a good tips there!

That's the solution to your problem. All you need is to keep on creating good killer content and back link to your website. Maybe, just maybe one day you will jump over to the top.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I will let those keywords ride for now and move onto other keywords. We jumped up to #2 pretty quick. So I think we should be able to beat the guys with sitelinks eventually. I guess it makes more sense to get as many keywords as possible on page #1 before obsessing too much over one or two positions.
