Competing Against Reciprocal Directories

I'm currently creating a niche directory and want it to be of the highest quality so there will be no reciprocals allowed.

My problem is that all of my competitors require reciprocals and most of them use redirects for the directory's outbound links (ex. www.directory.com/link.cfm?page=www.outgoingsite.com)

So not only do they have tons of incoming links but they also (at least I don't think) pass any of their PR on to other sites.

Any ideas on how to effectively compete with sites like this?

Use ur money if you have any, and use ur brain and marketing skills. Just do not give up, make it free directory, enter some good quality links urself , get some content going.

most reciprical links are useless anyway

purchase some quality links and you will be fine

Your brian is the most important part of the equation.

Why not think about making a great site instead of competing against someone?

your directory being free and all other reciprocal is probably a good thing
their is nothing worse than a reciprocal only directory
maybe have free and reciprocal but offer something more for reciprocal links such as integrating a deep links mod for reciprocals

I wanted to provide a reciprocal only directory as a project of mine.
Too bad that people eventually f'k it up for the rest, because it would have been a free reciprocal PR6 Link Directory had they not done so.

ahhh so life goes on :)

links are not just for PR or ranking, reciprocals are not necessarily dirty :)

Forget about what your competitors are doing, and forget that you're trying to promote a directory. You mentioned two key words/phrases in your post: 'niche' and 'highest quality'. If you manage to pull both of those aspects off adequately then you'll have no problem garnering links to your site. Simply promote it as you would any site, directory or not.

A high-quality site attracts high-quality links, and I'd take a dozen high-quality links over hundreds of reciprocals anyday.

    Good luck with your venture,

    Phlegm...
