What are people using to evaluate their competition.

Basically when i search for my top key words my site is not the top 3. i would like to evaluate why those sites are in the top 3 and mine is not. what are statistics and such that i should be be looking at?

Also, when i do link:www.domain.com on yahoo, i am assuming that the sites returned are in order value. is this correct, or are they randomly listed?

Look at the statistics at alexa.com for the competitor's sites. It will show you their rank and sites linked to. For most SE linking relative sites are important.

i have a read a lot of people's posts on V7N that says Alexa is crap.

basically you can easily artificially boost your Alexa ranking, and that's not a good measure.

anyway to get Google to rank your bank links in order of significance?

You should look at basic important information like:

    Age of the site
Text used in the back links to the competition
    Who do they link to
    Who is linking to them
Total number of links in the big Search Engines
number of pages indexed for the site
    Title, meta-tags
    Google PR
    Alexa Rankings

This will give you an initial idea of your top 10 competitors and why are they ranking high.

thanks, all great information. basically i should be studying everything on their sites that make up placement and rankings.

when you say total number of links in the big search engines, should i be looking at the statics of IBLs from Google, yahoo and msn? i have been using just yahoo to find back links because it seems to give the most accurate list. Google seems to truncate the list quite a bit and not show all linked sites. or even the correct number.

also is there any way to find the value passed from previous sites? for example if i did link:http://www.domain.com, in the yahoo search engine, will it rank those sites in order of importance. or are the sites queered in no particular order?

i like this tool, but it seems to be really inaccurate. When i put my domain in there it tels me i have 83,000 back links. however when my site hows up in the 1 -20 rankings it says i have 85,200. but then when i go to yahoo and to link:http://www.ldpost.com i receive about 124,000 back links.

based on this i do not really trust the data coming form this site. especially if it is off by about 40,000 links.

If you believe in myth that API provides real data then you should believe that you have 83,000 backlinks not 124,000.

Also keep in mind different of backlinks for particular webpage and domain name.

First you have to ask yourself, ''why did I choose those keywords?"

Use nichebot for finding keyword phrases with big demand and low competition. The end column 'Ratio' is important. The lower the easier it is to beat. :)

the main factors that I look at are the allinanchor:keyword command and also the quality of the backlinks. If you can beat you competitor on these then you'll almost certainly be top.
