Comparison using one of the "date" formatting codes

Good day -

I know that I can get the number of the day of the week from the current date (Sunday=0, Monday=1 and so on). I would like to use that number in an error-checking routine. Is it possible to turn the number of the day of the week into a variable that I can then use to compare against another value?

http://php.net/date ? $day=date("d"); or whatever the letter is for the day of the week.
