Compare to Your Competitors Before Your Visitors Do, that's one article i read couple of months ago, but how am I going to understand what techniques they are using?

This question in on every webmasters mind. I found a simpe way, not long time ago, using Alexa.com website to find out in general ways the techniques used by competitors.

The new Alexa website is very accurate compared to the old one. First thing to do, is to type your competitor's url in the search box. After that click on the number above the "SIte Linking In".

Afterwards, all the activities, links, forum posts, directories they submited, affiliate programs, will appear .

    Enjoy

Combined with Yahoo Site Explorer this technique can work miracles.

It sounds good, but I am afraid Alexa sucks.

I typed in doubleyourdating, for example, and Alexa states that there are 379 sites linking in.

I know that there are many more than that.

    Alexa was never accurate anyway.

To compete with Google, I would think that they would be.

Alexa is a joke, in my opinion.

The idea of checking competitors is good though.

You'd have better luck checking Hitwise for stuff like that. Their data is actually pretty accurate.

Yeah, I prefer SEOElite.com or Even Yahoo answers for this kind of job. You can also use this technique to contact their affiliates and offer them a better deal if you're feeling sneaky ;)

It's also great to outrank people in the search engines and find out where they're advertising!

I use alexa and quantcast to get my demographics and some of the sites I want to promote on.

I find where they like to promote by using link: "site name" on google and it shows me all the links that point to that site.

Alexa is good, but there are more ways to get it done. So use them all.

Also, don't forget to use the AdWords keyword tool to find out the keywords they are using.

Alexa still isn't really accurate. yahoo site explorer is by far the fastest in terms of indexing links and pages to a site. Other factors, we still need something more than what alexa currently is!
