Community Builder or Jomsocial?

I've used both and there are definitely pros and cons to both, but overall I like Jomsocial better because of its easiness and nice layouts. What do you like and why?

I've been using CB for years, and have learned and written my own CB plugs etc. I've also started developing for JS.

JS's features seem to be more "hip" and up to date with what is going on, like status updates of facebook and twitter and stuff like that. If you are into customizing profiles then CB has a big edge. You can't even put profile fields into tabs to save space, at least yet in JS.

Both very good. Depends on what you want your experience and interface as an admin to be like I suppose.

I'm considering switching to JS for a "test period" to see if the members like it better.

In my opinion, JS code is much cleaner and easy. The features are much better and it worth the money.

Community Builder (for me anyway) is easy to extend. CB is a lot less rigid now than people assert; it just isn't as "cute" out of the box.

You will have to pay for BOTH ultimately if you really are serious about setting up a social network. CB core is free, but to get full documentation, and some really great plugins (i.e., Wall, personal member galleries, etc.) you do need to pay a subscription fee of about $40 USD per year (that's to download - once you have the plugins, you can use them forever) compared with, what, $140 or some such for JS professional? Not everyone has that budget. Not a put down, just an observation. :) Plus, you can find quite a few free or dirt cheap CB plugins.

I will say that CB is better for those who don't mind putting in the work to customize it. It took me a week or so, but I customized CB to have a layout that looks nothing like it did out of the box - without core hacks. My members appear to really love it. It requires programming (which means you need to understand how it works), but I'd be hard pressed to leave CB at this point. If you can code, you can literally make it do just about anything you want. And yes, I have a "home grown" activity wall for it (sorry, could not justify spending the $$$ for CB SuperActivity).

Of course, you have to decide what you want your profile center to do, and what you're willing to invest in terms of time and technical work to accomplish this.

CB was brilliant about 5 years ago, but the structure and layout seems so out dated to me.

You can install Jomsocial and not have to make any modifications, it looks great out the box.

CB barely gets updated. It is in old style. Jomsocial is still under development and very modern. I have worked with both. Jomsocial is very very nice OOB while CB may have more hacks available for random things.

I use JomSocial and I love it, worth every penny. And for what it's worth, People.Joomla.org uses JomSocial as their platform... so you can assume that it's technically inline with Joomla's structure, it uses sound code and that it's probably going to stick around for a while.

If you are ready to pay, I recommend JomSocial. Its code is very clean and professional. It is also user-friendly. The greatest thing should be its tons of community oriental features. Maintenance & upgrade is easier. It is really worth!!!
Anyway, if you don't want to pay, go with CB
