Blog commenting is something I used to do religiously, but then saw that it had a limited benefit. Sure they were one way links on do follow blogs, but the juice from these links did not last once the blog posts were archived.

However, blogs ARE a great place to build links. You just want your links IN the content. This is how I get my websites on page one of Google on a regular basis.

And PR is a HUGE factor. Get some good anchor text in your links on a PR 5 or PR 6 site and you will see a good increase in the SERPS guaranteed.

Rather than just posting comments on blogs that are both high PR and do follow, I would also suggest throwing in a few posts on low PR and/or no follow blogs. This type of posting makes your efforts look more natural versus an obvious attempt to gain back links. I would also be wary of using anchor text as your name. Some blog owners don't care for that and will delete your comment so you get nothing. Would you rather get a link using your name or nothing at all? Just my .02 worth on this topic.

On the Google toolbar there is an option to show pr. I'm afraid I can't remember how I did it now but you end up with a small rectangle on the toolbar which shows you at a glance the page's pr and if it is ranked by google.

I think you are right - unfortunately I had been doing this but recently read a seo blog saying that this can get you landed on a list of spammers where your email ip address website etc are recognised and comments get automatically deleted!!! Wish I'd read that sooner.

I've had great success with blog commenting. I'd also suggest checking out topcommenter blogs since you can easily get sitewide backlinks!

A higher pagerank blog will benefit you more. That way you will get some nice link juice.

I use the firefox addon Live PageRank to check pagerank.
