I am considering finding dot follow blogs to comment on to build links and traffic to my site but am not sure it is worth the time. Has anyone who has tried this found that it helped their site. If so how?
Also how many post per day, week or month did you to for this to work.

If you are going for traffic and exposure, it is not hard to find blogs where you can get noticed and thus get some solid indirect traffic. However, if you are just trying to spam for links, there are better ways to get links that will count. Also, remember, online marketing is just that, marketing. You should be focused on getting the word out on your product/service to get traffic, not just get links to make Google think you are important. Getting real people to think you are important will get you a lot further.

From my experience it is very likely your link won't pass the approval mechanism on most blog nowadays. Link are usually accepted in the URL field. And if you put your keyword rich nickname in the name field instead of your name you might not passed the spam zombie. You can try it if you want to experience it yourself to believe.

I would post comments on blogs which are related to your site.
