I don't understand what perspective you're coming from here. You mean if I have comments on one of my websites, or if I spam comments with links on other people's websites?

Sorry don't mean to complicate things here, I'm just a little confused as to which scenario you are trying to capture. I am interested in what the results will be actually. Thanks.

If I spam comments on other peoples blogs...

I've heard from people that spamming comments/pings will not hurt your site because you cannot control the links from other people. This way, you cannot hurt a competitor by comment spamming their websites.

I've also heard from people that spamming will land you in the sandbox or a manual penalty in ranking if the blogs complain to google about the spam. This is contradictary to the first, but either could make sense in my opinion.

I just wanted to see which way most people leans towards in the terms of external links from undesirable sources

You can take a competitor out of google by using a blogger autocomment script and spam linking forums and bloggers.
I have tested it. He was number one for my targeted word. Now, he is not even indexed.
18347 were the number of links delivered across all forums and blogs networks. Of course some may have been flagged and some deleted, but most of them remained active.
But this is only hardcore blackhat and unless you really piss someone off you do not have to fear that you will be the victim. Usually comment and blog spam links are used for making money purposes and very rarely for scaring competition.

It won't hurt your site at all.
But don't expect to rank higher in search engines for spamming in comments, either ;)

Both your statements are nonsense. Link spam in a moderated fashion will increase your position in serps while abusing it will hurt your site.

Have you ever tried link spamming? I am talking about automatic generators delivering thousands or even ten thousands links per day, and not the manual blog spamming. If you didn't, then do not advise wrong.

Unlessn your website is a moderatly big website Google will put you in the sandbox for accumilating too many link in a short period, as this triggers the spam alarm bells. But I guess doing this on the sly, maybe doing just a few a day won't hurt.

But the more you spam, the more other people are incouraged to do so.

If the comments are caught by Akismet then you should have no problems. From what I understand Akismet catches all the comments and then you must moderate whether they show up or not on your pages.

I dont think it will hurt you if other people comment on your blogs. Why else would they allow that option? But then again what do I do =)
