I guess CJ will pocket it and you will never know it.

"invalid link - cj not associated with it". CJ obviously is not associated with such activity. Advertisers have either direct (inhouse) affiliate program or one through a network. In case a valid link is productive you receive commission either from advertiser or network.
If your link, expired for you and still active with CJ, is productive, you would not be paid. Some other networks disable the links for which your website has been expired. With CJ advertisers, even your expired links click to destination websites.

Are you posting the banners on like craigslist? Like if I were to say Get a Loan now!!! and have the banner in the ad if someone clicked on it and applied and was accepted and you got commission out of it that would be getting a commission off a invalid link, you might not get paid for it and you might depends on how often you post ads/banners/text links on pages that cj doesn't know about. If you plan to advertise on other spots that you did not tell CJ about add them to you account. Like if you had a blog and that is what you opened the account with but since then you have made 20 more you should let cj know and add them to the account. If you are posting banner ads/text links from the advertiser onto such sites as craigslist you should stop they can terminate for that as it is a violation of the TOS.
If you are advertising on craigslist advertise your blog/webpage for hits. Don't advertise the banner/text link itself. You have a wonderful day!

Sorry, I misread "site is not associated with cj". You obviously meant your site and not the linked one. If you have multple sites and only one site is associated with your cj account, links at all your sites are valid. Invalidity arises from posting links at public blogs and forum sites. I had over 30 domains - now reducing - only one is associated with CJ and all have CJ links.

If you promote your links on a different website other than the one you have registered on CJ the advertisers and CJ will know it because most softwares shows the URL that the link was placed and clicked...so to make sure you don't get banned place the links on that website you registered on CJ or register all websites that you are using...

    Good-bye.
