I just read from news today that a search engine called "accoona" had attracted huge investment and is aiming at an Google alternative. More information available at: http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=181502178
Accoona's been around for years, they never got anywhere. Calling themselves a Google competitor is only to try to get press and make an interesting headline. Eric
Maybe they should set their sights a little lower... Like maybe they should try to compete against Alta Vista or Lycos first.
IMHO no one can compete with Google until unless it has more user's data than Google. Google has collected more than enough information and understands users.
It claimed that it has 100 million $ financial support. 100M is not a very small amount to do something!
Acoona is good, always in my bookmarks from years but i don't think it will compete with Big Daddy Google. More has to done for Going competite with Google. Regards,
Nice spam redirect in your "signature" So I have one question: did you work for acoona before you registered at Dp or are you new recruits?
That's still not enough to compete with Google. Now if it had in the billions of dollars like Google has, then we'd be talking about competition.
... or a few millions. Compared to ask.com, they are not all that bad. But look at the marketing strategies and compare cool TV commercials vs. hiring forum posters to spam
Compare that to $50 Billion in cash that Microsoft has sitting in the bank. Now, take a look at MSN as a competitor to Google. Based on your assumption, MSN should be a major threat to Google - especially since Microsoft has its hooks into most desktops - customers who are doing search. Is MSN a major threat to Google? I submit Google will be the doer of their own destruction, not a competitor.
If I had a hundred million bucks in back of me...going after googles crumbs would be the last thing I would want to do. Thats a ton of money--- there are some limits as to what you could do--- but not that many.
In the realm of business as it relates to search engines 100m buys you a happy meal, nothing more. Money is not the determining factor for acquiring a majority market share, it helps but it is not the only factor. If this was so Microsoft would own the search business, which at some point may happen. I have to agree with the other poster, Google will be their own demise. Right now Google is trying to place their hands in every aspect of online search, this in my opinion will be one of serveral factors that will cause them to fall.
Isn't the only thing Accoona had going for it, that Clinton put his name behind it? (at least somewhat)
ok, my new website is there in top10 for its keyword (same as in the other SEs) so I'll give them credit
