I'd also have to agree that choosing the extension based on the type of site is not very good advice.

    Domain TLD priority:
    .com: every website.
.net: only if .com isn't available. If it's not available, I may reconsider domain name with slight variation. e.g. I want myperfectdomain.com but it's taken, so I'll go with theperfectdomain.com. [Not saying either domain name is available/or not available: just using as an example].
.org: purchase if site starts to tread uphill in terms of popularity and/or profit.
.us: I prefer to use this domain name TLD for catchy/or pun TLDs. Thisis.us, nothingbeats.us, godblessthe.us, etc.

Anything outside of those would be for specific [foreign] traffic. For example, trying to capture more German market with .de, or .cn for china.

    Couple of things..
... I do think that the type of site it is should determine the domain name here.. If it is an affilaite based website with a hot product and you are looking to catch the wave, the hyphenated .com would be best for this situation... at this point, you're only marketing a link and a headline
... But agreed, if u r looking to stick around a while, I would want a dot com for long term - even if it means altering my desired name to fit nicely... (if 'customhats.com' is taken, try 'customhatz.com')... it might take a little bit longer for your existing people to catch on, but they WILL catch on, and the next wave of business will only know you as your altered name.

and secondly, this thread has made me think if there are any dot net websites that I frequent or ever have, and I hate to say it, because I also like the dot net names for some strange reason, but I can't think of any that come to mind.

.com with hyphens from ma side would be a good option as .com without hyphen has alrdy been sold and this shows the popularity of the site...

so easier to sell in the market where popularity rules...

and then again .net can't give you what .com can...

Have you tried .tel?? Go with any .com, with dashes, etc. then get your best .tel name with a click link. Plus, the keywords will be picked up on Google, and you can update information any time. .tel lets the end user decide how they want to contact you... with click to call on a mobile phone, or visit your website, etc.:)
    Good Luck

I would get the .net no hyphens. Type in traffic hates hyphens!

Depends if the site already has a lot of backlinks. If not, then .net all the way!

.COM with hyphens most definitely. Hyphens don't affect your Search Engine positions while as a .net will.
