what is the difference between the two? i've seen here people favor the .com more, any particular reason? there's this keyword i'm targeting, it's taken in .com but available in .org. short, memorable and to the point keyword.
I'd be curious to find out as to what percentage of traffic intended for www.archive.org falls onto the .com
if i was a company, no doubt i'd have used .com since i wouldnt want people to confuse company.com as company.org. but for an info site? is there a difference? and the domain registrar is offering discounted prices for .org. i'm getting suspicious, really.
Well, .ORG is meant for non-profit organisations. That's why it's used by websites like DMOZ, archive.org and others.
traditionally perhaps, but as there were never any restrictions + alot of non profits used .com it has blurred the boundry between the 2.
Non-profit means is has a legal status of such, so no, an informational site alone wouldn't be a non-profit. Any site that runs advertising, takes donations (for bandwidth, etc) or generates ANY type of revenue is considered commerical - even if you aren't selling any type of product or service. A commerical site could also be a non-profit site. There is nothing that legally prevents anyone from using a .org- if that is what you are asking.
I'd say go for it. I once thought it was for non profits, but anyone can get them. It makes your site seem more legit that way.
i took a .org and a .info. i am thinking of making the .info the primary one and do a redirect script for the .org. strange why i don't see many .info domains on SEs.
From wiki -- "originally intended for use by organizations that did not meet the requirements for other gTLDs." Same with .net, it was originally intended for ISPs and the like. Always go for the .com or else you are just giving free traffic to the site that is the .com. These poker sites can advertise the .net on TV in the US because of DoJ rules, but a big percentage of people who see the commercial just go to the .com anyways.
