.com vs .org vs .info vs others?

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by IanT, Feb 8, 2010.

Just looking for some guidance I have some domains I have been brainstorming over , I know .com and .org are most popular, but does that mean you soulf get better traffic with those as opposed to others? I would like to put together some informational sites and product review sites as well as others. What would be the best end syntax to use? Or is it really irrelevant and totally dependent on content for the given site?

    Thanks a bunch!

COM and NET are most popular, org not so much and depending on the name INFO could be more popular than org

I suppose that COM is the domain name extension everyone wants. The second in my opinion is NET domain name.

I stick to .com only, and maybe buy the .org as well.

if the bussines is international or US is ok with .com but if you are a newspaper for example from Poland it better helps a .pl domain than a .com one!

In my opinion, .info looks cheap. Making it four letters was a mistake, .inf would have been better.

    My 2¢.

I use keyoword, for any DLTs. But .com is the best.

If you have a choice, go with .com
It's not necessarily a ranking thing, it's a human thing.
When it's time to sell the site, you'll be glad its a .com
And if the .com is available and you don't get it, someone else will eventually, especially if your site does well.
    Just me 2 cents.

Go with the dot com, especially if it's a business website.

if you are targeting local traffic, then country specific extensions are the best (ie .ca, .ca etc)
If not go for .com and then .net followed by .org
dont get any of this .info or .biz or whatever else

1st choice should be .com, 2nd.net, 3rd .org, then .info

Is the site something people would likely tell a friend about in a conversation, or is it something people are more likely to find using a search engine ?

If the site is something more people are going to find via links on other sites or via search engines it really doesn't make a difference what TLD you use.

I've seen .info sites rank #1 in search results, but I've never once had someone tell me about an awesome .info/.org/etc site during a face-to-face conversation.

thank you all for your feedback!!! I think it might be a split 50/50 or some percentage... people are going to refer friends to this site, but it might come up in the search results (hopefully) as well
