If I were a search engine, I would. Considering of course all of the Blackhat/Spammers who register .info for cheap just so they can throw them away when they get caught/banned by the Search Engines.

Most good .com domains are registered, so people will have to consider other extensions

I'm new here to digital point, I'm very unsure on the subject of wether to choose a .com or .info extension for an information site.

I'm looking to start a new information website, the .com name is taken, but the .info is the only one left and I'm thinking if i should register it or decide another name.

Is there a big difference between the extension? I'm stuck on this issue, maybe a few can share some light ?

Always that you can register a COM over any other extensions.

If you have a memorable name chances are that people type COM rather than INFO

NET is the next option in line, though depend on the name INFO could be better in some cases, and there are success stories using this extension.

Problem with INFO is that after being released early in the 2002 or so the extension never got the expected popularity until 2004 when a FREE promo was launched.

That associated the extension when countless multi-farm and spam sites that left domain dropped when renewal was due, but there are many still alive.

I'd just hate to register and go through a .info website completely and have it not receive the traffic it deserves because of the extension.

True, and it's also more marketable than .info IMO... .info sounds cheap just because the domains are cheap ;)

Stick to .com, its only $5 more or so. It's worth it if you want to go long term with your site. If you just want a cheap easy MFA site, then go with .info to save a few $

The extension is irrelevant from a click through and search engine perspective. Any real world advertising may have retention issues - but I'm guessing you aren't planning on a huge billboard campaign to support your site.

My husband's site is on a .info and is PR5 (see current sig) and the only hassles we get are when we give people his email address and they haven't encountered a .info before and question our accuracy.

Couple of observations (I own numerous .com and .info domains.)

    -- .com domains are generally preferable for resale purposes - there is a common misconception that .info domains are inferior or more 'spammy' (that's a description that is occasionally touted on these boards with regard to .info domains);

-- if using email at a .info domain, I have found that occasionally address checking routines in forms do not correctly handle the .info extension and always return as being an 'incorrect' email address.

    Cheers,

you cannot compare .com with .info, .info domains arent very popular, i dont own any .info but own a few .com, I've never registered anything outside of .com, .net, and .org -- but I'm not saying .info is bad I'm just saying dont compare it with .com :)

The thing is that most non-techie users won't even notice. They'll click the link in the site and have no idea if it's a .com or a .info and won't understand the difference. They won't care that the reg fee on one is different, they probably don't even know how to register a domain!

Mesoc hasn't mentioned trading, developing sites for sale etc. If the goal is to build up a site, make it your business, promote it and be proud of it then go for the best domain possible. First choice will always be .com but if the name of your choice isn't available then look elsewhere.

I just bought an .info domain. Haven't used it yet but plan to soon. There's no reason not to get one since they're less than $1. In all reality though, I don't think I've ever been to a website with .info

That's the point, you don't think you have, but most people don't check the address of every page they visit.

I think .info is just as good as .com as far as search engines are concerned. People probably aren't as likely to type in your website address with .info though.

.info is OK if you will get most traffic from search engines and links

i'll be advertising most on forums, directories, and articles, site will be built from scratch, having a .info extension, it won't be effected by my ways of advertising ? Cost is not the issue, sure saving 8 bucks is great, but the domain I want only .info is available ( and other extensions that i wont bother with )

I think .info would be good for blogs & micro sites that are heavily content driven and promote your main sites. Like I said before, I haven't used my .info's yet but plan to with this method. I guess time will tell how effective they are.

I found the same email problem with INFO domains and found that such checking routines do not recognize other extensions than com, net, and org.

And the worst came last night when a form refused to accept my dot.com email because it has a dash in the middle :S

Wait till you fill out a lengthy form that asks you for your address, gives country options then pings you back because it doesn't recognise your postal code!
