.com vs .biz

Not sure what category this question belongs in? - -

I can't find a good url w/ the .com designation for laser cutting right now. What kind of luck have people had marketing sites w/ .biz? Are they able to rank well with Google and Yahoo? My main site is www.ryanscreenprinting.com. I am thinking about setting up a general laser cutting site (.biz) with lots of content, back links to my main site, some banner ads, but generally just to promote my main site. Does this type of lead site work for people? It sound like many of you are doing this but I just want to make sure that I'm not missing something.

    Txs

You may suffer slightly as far as type-in traffic is concerned (and when it comes to selling the site) but as far as im aware it makes little difference what TLD you use from the search engine's perspective.

I have read sites stating they have backlinks from .gov.au or .org.au sites - for example (.gov.uk would be the same and so on), as a feature or selling point.

I would value a .gov.au or a .org.au link above a .com.au link [other factors being equal] simply because they are non-commercial.

These sites may hold a slight advantage from an authority / integrity point of view in what they have to offer in terms of serp placement and value as backlinks, but straight .org sites would have no advantage as far as I would guess as anyone can register .org

But in terms of .com versus .biz I see no difference.

Managed to track down a GoogleGuy quote on the subject of sites receiving a boost for EDU or GOV links from Google, that is assuming you put any weight on what this WW member has to say ;)

    link to quote

The same applies to org.uk sites. You can run commercial sites from them.

I always prefer the .com name when I can get it. But, if there is a name I really like AND the .com and .net extensions with the same name are not very popular ... then I go with .org or .biz and have never seen any difference in how they are treated by SE's. GoDaddy always has a nice sale on .biz so I get these quite a bit when the .com is not available.

Thanks for the great advice! Is GoDaddy good for hosting too? My other site is on Earthlink and the pricing difference is huge!

godaddy is an awesome registrar and they give you complete control over everyting in their admin panel and they have the lowest prices. I have never used any of there other services, but I would like to believe they carry the same high qual customer service across all their products.

There is no REAL difference between .biz and .com in terms of optimisation, but I'd much rather do business w/ a .com than .biz, I don't know why...just one of those biases of mine....unfounded probably, but some would probably agree.

I've used them before and was completely satisfied. The only reason I switched was to get a reseller account.

.com is always best, but your options become limited as time goes by.

From what I understand, it doesn't matter much to search engines.

I agree. The TLD doesn't matter for the search engines, but it looks better for your visitors/customers if you have a .com instead of a .biz, etc.
You'ld also lose a bit traffic, because people tend to use .com first and might forget that your TLD was .biz.

Personally I prefer registering a long .com over a short .biz, but that's just me.

While I do think a .com is important - it really depends on how you plan to drive traffic. If you plan on driving traffic via word of mouth then a 2 word .com domain is a must. If you're going to use PPC, SEO and other methods than who cares if it's a .com or .net or .biz.

To the best of my knowledge I don't think Google/Yahoo penalize for not having a .com domain. If someone tells you they know for sure, they are lying unless they wrote the algorithm used by those sites.

A .biz doesn't look as good on a business card but if it means getting a 2 word domain instead of a "longsentence.com" then go with the .biz.

I do not mind to .biz if the .com is no longer available for 2 words exact domain name.

I personally will not use .biz for 3-4 words as I can play around with them to get .com.

.com is the best, that's is the answer.

I would not use biz. Never gone to a site like that. Does anyone think .biz have credibility?
