Is it always a good idea to blend colors when placing ads? I'm noticing a few sites using contrasting colors recently. Any thoughts on this?

Take a gander at the ads placed on the top right of this forum for example. DP has a script rotating it between different pastel colors.

I did some testing and the ads that blend in work the best (for me, anyway)

that really depends on your site and visitors. depending on site and content, some site will do well if the ads are blended in. other will do well if it has contrasting color. usually if it is a content based site, blending in works pretty well. you however can test both and see which one words well for you

I prefer Blending the ads...Contrasting colors will irritate the readers.

Depends on your sites target audience ... if they are small kids, then they like more flashy and jazzy stuff, so may be contrast colors work better there.

You cannot conclude anything unless you test it. Known fact is that Blended ads work better than outstanding ones. But there are always exceptions !

You want to blend in the ads in your site as much as possible so that people think that the ads are apart of the site.
