I've often wondered by the north east has so few good or great college football programs. The state of New York has Syracuse which is good at times but not always a top team. New England has what, Boston College? New Jersey has nothing. Why don't you see a team or two that is top or potentially a top 25 team like you do in the mid-west, south, and west coast?
I think most of the colleges in the NE are some of the most expensive in the country and therefore they tend to focus a lot less on the athletic programs - foosball being one of them. Maybe that's not a direct correlation but not too many professional athletes come out of Harvard/MIT, etc. that I know of Conversely aren't most basketball teams from the area some of the very best? UConn comes to mind, the Orangemen that you mentioned. I mean other than the state of FL, not TOO many powerhouse football teams exist on the East coast do they? Football is king in the south and west. Shi*, here in TX it's a religion almost. It starts young and they take it VERY seriously, high school especially.
I am well aware of Texas football, a town of 5000 will have a football stadium with 6000 filled seats for every game. There is something odd and just right with that. I think once you get down to Maryland you have one or more potentially top 25 team in every state: Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia. There are high school football teams in all those states, so I'd assume they wouldn't have trouble fielding great teams, filling stadiums, and making the programs more than pay for themselves. On the other hand, they can ship off their best athletes to the mid-west and west coast and keep me happy.
right, MD on down - schools get bigger, climate gets warmer. PA also has a lot of good HS football teams I think.
Soccer? For girls it's the big sport, for boys not even close. For American boys, soccer is only a draw if you are not big enough, fast enough or strong enough for football, basketball or baseball. I have a daughter in club soccer and all the male coaches are in the 5'6" to 5'9" range and they didn't give up a full ride football scholarship to USC to become a soccer guy. I don't think th NE's lack of college football is do to soccer. I am hoping UConn brings some respectibility to the area.
Lol , nope soccer is not a girl sport, i bet any of them football dummies wouldnt be able to last in a game and they would get tackled easier than itd take to tackle one of the short guys. I can tell you this, soccer players ARE faster than football players and stronger as well, since strength doesnt only count on the upper body.
Actually isn't Lacrosse pretty big for NE schools with the males? I mean it's not huge, might be a few steps behind soccer. Then there's always water polo
I played minor sports in high school and never diluded myself that wresting and cross country were major sports. You should do the same. If you are talking about soccer tacking (a combination sliding kick and trip), I think most football players would step over it and not fall down and hold their shins crying for a yellow card. And as far as faster and stronger, are you saying they are faster than wide receivers and stronger than offensive lineman. Tell me you are not that foolish. I'd like to see Landon Donovan take on Warren Sapp. You realize this thread was about football in the north east of USa right?
I believe even in the most blue blooded area the big three are football, basketball, and baseball and lacrosse would be somewhere below hockey and track & field. Lacrosse has made it to SoCal but it's got a ways to go to pass up track and field, cross country (by dauther is on a team with over 100 kids), volleyball, water polo, swimming, tennis, golf, and hockey.
Yes you asked why football isnt big in colleges here and i answered, as for your assumption that im in high school.... lol @ that. Anyway we gave you the answer. The second most played sport in colleges was given as well... its waterpolo. Soccer - Waterpolo in the NE are big, basketball is big as well... i dont know of colleges having american football teams around here... now we could make this a huge thread of why american football and soccer suck but lets not.. i was just giving u the reply. Long life real football.
