Collecting email addresses?

Hi I'm looking to create a database of email addresses for marketing purposes and need a way to collect them.
You could surely betray the user by promising tons of cool stuff and after they sign up tell them the website is under construction (had it happen to me before!).
Also do I have to put any disclaimer anywhere that tells the visitors that their emails may be used for marketting? Is this necessary to avoid any legal conflicts?

Saying site offers xxx, and you pay or give email, then you dont have it could land you in a lawsuit. Prob not, but it would not get you to far.

Its better to offer an op-in service if you dont have anything yet, then move the people over later on.

You must comply with CAN-SPAM laws at all time. You should be able to mange to google for it, and I recommend a TOS and PP at all times. :)

As long as the marketing purposes are done strictly by you, in other words, you're not selling, renting, or giving their information to a 3rd party; you should be okay. I will add to this, you really should have them double opt in to your list. That way, worse case scenario, you have proof that not only did they sign up to your list, they clicked on the confirmation email and confirmed that they did indeed want to sign up to your list.

As far as not delivering something that's promised, that's shady. I wouldn't suggest you even think about it. If your goals are to build a long term online business, you don't want to start out your business on shady tactics.

As l3vi says you need to watch the laws. In Australia you can't "harvest" email addresses and send them email. You need to have some kind of relationship and premission to email them or else you can get fined $22,000AUD for each one up to 120,000 or something along those lines.

Offer a free ebook and have them put their email address to download.

Correct me if I'm wrong here.

Based on what I've learned, if someone registering through your website, you can asked them to tick the box stating that they agree to receive newsletters, promotions, bla, bla, bla from you. If you're sending email, you could ask politely whether they agree to receive some information regarding the product you sold. If they say yes, then you could send them the information.
