Collecting email addresses becomes illegal if you have this malicious intent of sending its owners unsolicited email messages.

Not sure why you're quoting me, I'm not the thread starter. But I think we're saying the same thing.

I doubt that anyone can get caught harvesting email addresses. It's only the act of sending out the unsolicited bulk email when a person crosses the line.

Getting spam annoys the crap out of me. Though one wonders whether Olti gets spam and thinks "Wow, I wanna do that!".

    LOL, hell NO.
I'm having discussions with some guys about this issue, and I just wanted some legal sources to argue that it is not legal to harvest email addresses without asking for permission first.

    Regards.

Let me echo back what everyone else is stating; sending unsolicited mail from stolen addresses is illegal. There's a reason why you get 1-0 spam emails a year if you never disclose your address.

You have no idea what you are talking about and have obviously never read the CAN spam act. If you bothered to read the FTC page it clearly states that scraping is an aggravating factor that if combined with fake headers, adult (without warning), zombies, no physical address or nonworking opt out, Can result in an additional fine. If you don't do one of the above it is not illegal to send email to scraped addresses even though it is a bad idea. Scraped addresses = honeypots = blacklisted IP's causing your mail to go into the spam folder.

Don't scare people with jail time when you clearly haven't bothered to even read the short webpage put out by the FTC.
