Troubled genius Bobby Fischer dies alone in political exile far away in Iceland

He stopped playing and the demons came into his brain, to map out his destiny

Mercurial, brilliant, controversial, a true genius, a raving anti-semite, a Russian crusher (in chess), a dashing figure at the chessboard, he brought the game to the world forefront, his match play record will never be equaled, dynamic, unyielding over the chessboard, always seeks the sharpest and most direct method to victory, innocent to the ways of the world, betrayed by his country...........we shall never see his like again

I guess genius comes at a cost - in this case, Fischer had to pay with his sanity.

    Pete, Vancouver,

    Very sad

Very, very, very good chess player, but was a whack-job. I'm a huge chess fan and am glad to see others like it as well.

I read about that with a deep heart, he was a genius at chess, he should keep at it and not have his attentions diverted, same for Kasparov who is now seemed to be more interested in politics.

Me too a very complex and complicated tragedy

A former British chess champion, Bill Hartston, once said:
"Chess doesn't drive people mad, it keeps mad people sane."

Maybe therein lies the answer, alas we will never know
