I really enjoyed Kevin Yank's book. I actually would highly recommend any of the Sitepoint books for learning. Start out with HTML / CSS, this is your standard mark-up for websites that all websites use. Then move on to server side scripting such as PHP.

Web development is not that difficult. My recommendation is that you just jump right in and do something for yourself, this was how I learned. I was forced to learn when I decided I didn't want to pay someone to do a website for me.

Coding is no harder than learning to read and write. If you have learned to read and write, you can code.

I'd say the best to start with at first is basic HTML, once you've got friendly with that then go onto CSS (which can be used with your HTML stuff - to style it, etc..), then once you're confident on that, then you could then enter the world of the "dynamic" languages, like JavaScript, PHP or ASP (I prefer PHP to be honest).

W3Schools is an amazing site that'll help you from the basics. (W3Schools: http://www.w3schools.com)

** Oh and also, doing HTML stuff doesn't require you to be online - so you can just mess about with it in your My Documents folder. **

    :)

There's nothing to be afraid of, you'll definitely learn and improve, just enjoy and love what you do. Make it your passion and hobby. :)
