.co.uk versus .com domains

    Hi,

I have 2 websites that sell leather jackets. One is on the first page of Google.co.uk for the term 'leather jackets' whereas the other is nowhere to be seen.

Both sites were optimised by the same company and went live on the same date so there is no difference there, and the SEO company have ensured that they have gained the same links for both sites so there is no different there either.

The only thing is that the site that is on the 1st page has a co.uk domain, whereas the other is a .com.

Does anyone know if the .com site will struggle to be found on the UK search engines because that is what seems to be happening because the .com site seems to be performing well on worldwide searches.....

    Thanks :)

Tlds and hosting play a role in ranking. If you want to rank only for UK then you can also set geo-targetting in google webmaster tools. For me it has made difference whenever I have tried.

the .com and .co.uk shouldn't make a difference to not being found in the UK. I personally would never ever use an SEO company as they can be very expensive. They seem good though because you're being ranked for leather jackets, but maybe at the time it wasnt that expensive to do that. They can have a tendancy to rip people off for what you pay for hence the .com domain not showing up.

    Thanks guys.

Both of the sites are hosted in the UK. The only thing we've recently changed is the geo-targetting within the webmaster tools. My .com site was set to worldwide whereas my .co.uk site was set to UK only. I've changed the .com so that it's now set to target the UK.

How long do you think this will take before my search positions switch from .com to .co.uk?

yes, .com and .co.uk have an ENORMOUS difference in search engines.

I once bought 2 URLS with a semi competitive keyword phrase in the URL...t a .com and .co.uk and done loads of work on the .com and it got onto the first page in google.com, I hardly done anywork on the .co.uk and bingo - was first in google.co.uk

having a .com means international market, .co.uk means just the UK, so if your site is for UK only then get a .co.uk and you will find it much easier to promote for SEO
