co.uk domain registrar. Suggestions?

Any suggestions for co.uk domain registration with good price plus all the basics that just work?

Am transferring my remaining .com domains to namecheap. A few providers charge 3 quid + VAT = 5.50 usd for co.uk, namecheap and godaddy want 9 usd for uk domains. This small difference adds up when multiplied up by # domains, few years.

123-reg.com seemed a possible choice and found nothing on these boards to contradict that but a google search showed up huge amounts of complaints. In that case I'll pay the extra for namecheap.

Compila.com are suggested in the 2006 thread. Less complaints about them but is that only because they are relatively tiny?

    By basics I mean
    - online control panel to specify nameservers
    - free transfer out
    - pay by paypal
    - support online (hopefully never needed)
    - have existed 3 years+ and are just going to plod along providing a working service, collecting renewals. I.e. not sell to the next rip-off megalomaniac shark to come along (no animosity there about current provider. :) )

    Any recommendation here?

yeah i use godaddy and any promo code that i can google at the time, i like the fact we get it at a good exchange rate, all the other places iff looked for uk domains tend to be really expensive on the hosting side of things.

GoDaddy has too many ads, i'd never recommend them. Plus they charge an extra $0.20 as ICANN fee for some TLDs, its not included in the price...

    Go for Name.com ;)

I would suggest 123-reg.co.uk they are cheap and very reliable !! They are the main domain registrar here in the UK.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

Both here and on the specific thread I started asking for info on 123, seems that most do not have a problem.
    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1423259

For the benefit of anyone making the same choice, here was my try and thought on the suggestions here:

Thus godaddy = Supplier that forces you to go looking for coupons or offers to get a competetive price is not my first choice especially when the standard price is +60%. Anyway do you get to use a coupon on renewal and what about when you transfer in? Hmm OK, am now giving up on finding a way to actally see the coupon price! After the first reg screen they are asking for name etc before I saw an opportunity to enter a coupon code and

    name.com want 25$ for 2 years

dynadot 8.99 per year - I guess USD.

1and1.co.uk - NB you have to go to the co.uk to buy uk domains not the .com - 3 pounds plus VAT. Headlining a 2.50 first year but since you have to pay two years and the second is at 3 the real price is 2.75 + VAT for first two years. Negative points for being misleading

So it's either 1and1.com or 123-reg.com from that list.
Probably given the volume of votes for 123-reg.co.uk and no-one here said anything bad about them will give them a go.

    Hi woodley,

cpanel is something that comes with hosting which you may also have with 1and1. Personally I would always choose to have a domain-registrar which is a differrent company to where you host your pages. This means if there is some problem with the host and you can not access their system, you can buy hosting from a seperate company and switch your website to the new host.

The domain registrar usually has an online screen that allows you to enter a DNS address - this is the address which determines what host will get all requests for your pages.

Hmm HTH. Wanted to help with some explanation but am not sure I haven't just made it all more confusing.

OK well I transferred one uk domain into 123-reg which seems to have worked seamlessly [and immediately].

Only issue is that I can't confirm that the payment with paypal works OK until it is 90 days from expiry.
AFAICS no way to make a transfer into the 123-reg account until there is something to pay for. Also I can't see any auto renewal options. Anyone know if either of those options exist. Wth namecheap I can add $ to my namecheap account and use that credit to make payments without making a further transfer from paypal.

Just flicking through the stuff on the 123 control panel I found this which made me laugh.
Not really funny for those taken in by it and I wonder if the choice of wording makes this offer illegal. The fabulous art of selling somebody something that they already own .... yeah yeah I know they are selling the hosting of a subdomain [which happens to be "free"=included with many hosts] or perhaps the service of setting it up [which you have to do yourself when it's included] but they don't exactly say that do they .... barely legal?

Thanks again to all who offerred advice here.

If you need register domain name in the co.uk extension there is no need to register them into the UK. Domain name registrars around the world will be able to offer this feature for you

I would have to say 123-Reg.co.uk

I have had over 20-25 domains registered with them over the years and any slight issues have always been dealt with quickly and efficiently.

    I would recommend them.

Sorry for this but this thread seriously NEEDS resurrecting.

123-reg.co.uk accepts paypal ONLY for new registrations.

I think from my ticket that they then require automatic ongoing payment to be set up.

They allowed my transfer in and it seems they will allow a transfer out but not done yet. Next task is find a new registrar. their system does seem to be excellent and it's a shame they don't accept paypal but I prefer to pay the extra $9 for each domain than give any domain-hosting company a credit card again.

    1and1.co.uk does not accept paypal.

weycrest.co.uk seem to accept paypal but do not give a control panel to change your nameservers. Additionally you can't sign up without doing a transfer and I don't want to change the IPS tag and get a whole new hassle of trying to change it back untiol I have registered at least a support-helpdesk account since that is their method to change nameservers.

    So a final call ....

Does anyone know a UK registrar with the basics as in OP and a good record who accept paypal and give somewhere near to base price ($10/2years) for .co.uk names.

From my research so far there isn't one.

Opportunity? I guess only if you can either make money from huge volumes and a totally automated system or by selling customers other services having established a good relationship.
