.co.uk and Americans

In your opinions how do Americans generally view country specific domains such as .co.uk when considering trust, accuracy and professionalism e.g. before making a purchase? Would the average non-technical American recognise the TLD or possibly see it as some strange/cheap/long name?

    Thanks

If you're doing business worldwide then I'd try to get hold of a .com or .net. Many people would automatically assume that a .co.uk would only ship locally.

I'm not American, I'm Canadian, but.. I've been around long enough to know that co.uk is the UK equivalent of a .com; it's been around longer and more popular than most of the other ccTLD's (along with .de, etc). The average joe though, isn't necessarily as aware of that fact and might not recognize it, as you said.

    I reckon they would - I'd invest in a .net just in case - they're only $5 from moniker.com
