I've thought about picking up a few .co's just for the fact that some people might not type the whole URL in
    does this happen a lot?

I can honestly say... Nope it does not happen a lot if at all.
Consider most people never type in the URL in the first place then of those who do, only 1-2% mistype.

Search engine placement is the thing I would be worried about most. Consider how you look at websites and judge from that. The average person uses Google or some other search engine (probably search engine tool bar)to do MOST of their browsing. There most people would not type in the extension at all. If they want to go to Google, they will just type in the word Google and choose the first link. Same for any major site that are some the most highly ranked sites.

Actual type in traffic is nearly obsolete now a days. There was a study done on this that I can not site at this time but I am sure you can look up how little traffic is actually typed in, and then make a good estimate of the little type in traffic, how much of that is typo.

    Cheers

So .. if we can.. maybe a little review with what little information we have already in regards to dot co domain names that can possibly help some of us now and in the future.
... i would love everyone's opinions on this if we could.

    - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Please feel free to revise, edit, add or subtract anything from below.

At this very early stage of existence for the dot co extension, would you agree or disagree with all or any of the following:

    a) - the highest perceived value 'at the moment' appears to be spanish/columbian words.

    b) - geo names with dot co are - and will be - very valuable and sought after with this extension.

    c) - .co hacks (a domain name which ties the extension to the overall name to form one complete word) is considered now, and later, to be very valuable and/or sought after

    d) - a spanish/columbian 'hack' will now and in the future be considered valuable.

    e) - LLL's and NNN's will now and in the future be considered valuable and in demand in the dot co extension.

    f) - 'most' product names, again, 'at the moment', don't appear to carry as much value yet as the above style of names (?)

    g) - the disappointing results from the TRAFFIC auction are nothing more than circumstance (bad website, lack of promotion..etc) more so than growing perception of lack of value.

    h) - in "MOST" cases (not counting obvious differences, like organizational names), if there was a dot com that you wanted and it was taken, your next choice would be a dot co extension.

    i) - dot co names, to those who have tried, are finding it to be a hard sell at the moment to potential end users.

    j) - July 20, 2011 is going to be a FIELD day for drops.

    - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I wouldn't say that any or all of these are of my opinion, just a quick little rundown of some things we can take from the first quarter results.

Thanks all .. looking forward to hearing from both sides of this discussion.

Everything a new extension came up I used to register countless domain names for each, but this time I prefer invest in quality COMs even if there are fewer available and very little in the aftermarket within my budget.

overstock.com soon to be O.co. Also Facebook acquired fb.co. I guess this could only be good news for domainers that invested in the .co names.

Facebook does not need that domain
fb.co would be just a waste of money

well i think they needed it somehow and that's why the got it. When you are an established company as facebook, overstock, etc... it's called brand mangement / protection not "waste of time"

In my opinion, most of the CO domains are a waste of time and money
Obviously, they are an investment, the investors could make or lose their money in the future, there is a risk involved.

    Good luck anyway

They do not own fb.co. Facebook already protected its brand buy owning FB.com. Also they do not need to protect their brand in Colombia lol. Anyway, buying fb.co will be a totally waste of money.
    Agreed

No doubt, I've been very busy since I'm just realizing the huge potential of CO names as URL shortneners.

So you purchased a domain, which was soon withdrawn and set as reserved by the .CO Registry?
