.CO Domain Name Extensions Coming in July- SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS!

I haven't been able to find a whole lot of information pertaining to the .CO domain extension launch coming in July and have a few questions to explore before buying up some .co domains.

For those who don't know, you will be able to register domains in the following format: DOMAIN.CO

This TLD is being marketed as a worldwide domain name, not country specific. Obviously, .CO is very similar to .COM and in my opinion, many people will buy up domains for typo-traffic.

The .CO extension is being marketed in the following way:
"Understood around the world as an abbreviation for "Company," "Corporation" and "Commerce", .CO is easy to recognize, simple to remember and flexible to use. It offers international recognition in a fresh landscape where you can still choose the name you want, not just settle for what’s available."

Now before I go investing any money in to these .co domains I want some other peoples viewpoints:

    • Will the major search engines index and display these .co domains, specifically in the US?
    • Do you think search engines will give weight to .co domains?
    • Would you buy a .co domain name?
    • Do you think the .co launch will flop? Why or why not?

Please discuss the questions above and share any additional thoughts on the .co extension launch.

Well I don't think .co extension will be a flop, because in .com tld most of the good domain names are taken and people need some other extension to have a domain name of their own choice not the domain which they have to settle for. I think .co will be a hit....

.com's are in popular web-user culture (and main type-in for NorthAmerica) one of the main reference, but elsewhere there's a lot of .???.co
.co's are a fusion between .com & ???.co, and I would prefer type in .co then .co.uk (it's even shorter to type then .com on your mobile)
but before it takes the market: you have to change popular online culture & search engines must accept them as top worldwide TLD (it's still a colombian extension)...

There's a long road before it can gain the potential to beat .com domination: July will be more a speculative festival, then a global web-revolution!

I agree with Bohra . People won't give much importance to it . Its just a waste of time if u purchase it . Their are so many TLD which are just a waste to people . So this will another in that list .

Actually it wont be a flop. traffic just dont come from writing the name in the search bar, the major traffic come from links from search engines and links from other sites. the extension .com.co is becoming very popular as it gets tons of traffic compared to if it was another cctld extension. Secondly, this one is a top level domain and many companies will be waiting to invest in it as co can stand for company, commerce etc. This tld has potential and will not get flop.

    I agree.

$300 = screw that. As usual, things are in favor of the rich. That's the way domaining goes.

Don't put too much faith in .co's, as with all new extensions, all of the good ones are long gone. If not, they'll go through auctions and sell out way before you'll get a chance to snag them.

After reading through every thing it looks like people's opinion are split on this. I think I will preregister a few, probably 4. It is $30 to preregister, which does not guarantee that domain at all. You have the option to pay $299 for the "landrush" priority placement deal but that seems way to high to me. And if I understand it correctly you would have to pay $299 per year for the domain, no thanks. If you don't secure your requested domain you get a refund.

You never know, I might get lucky and actually secure a nice domain and then lucky again if major search engines ever treat them nicely. If all else fails, I waste a hundred bucks or so, no biggie. After looking in to it further I feel it is a gamble and the potential rewards could outweigh the minimal cost.

You are right, but also the other way arround is valid... + typing mistakes will add .co on the hit list!

Anyone pre-registered any .co ?? just curious...

    Cheers!

I purchased a .CO from godaddy to redirect it to my .COM website.

    This will prevent typos.
    Increase SEO.
    And prevent me from copycats.

.co domains are available for pre registration only. When you purchase it, you cannot use it yet, though it will be in your account. You will be able to use it after the land rush.

    * Will the major search engines index and display these .co domains, specifically in the US?
yes they will. Though they'll definitely rank higher in Colombia rather than in the US.

    * Do you think search engines will give weight to .co domains?
most definitely, .co will be given some bonus SEO scores in Colombia.

    * Would you buy a .co domain name?
yes if it's a super premium name.

    * Do you think the .co launch will flop? Why or why not?
yes I do think so. Basically people will look at .co as the scammers heaven for typos. I really don't think domain names is a growing business in Colombia.

Would it be a great idea to purchase TERRORIST.CO and then sell it to those colombian terrorists for a large amount of money?
