Of course YES! These domains are normally used on micro-niche sites.

Does it mean co.cc sites still can get good serps if they have unique content?

    A FOLLOW UP QUESTION:

Given that the sites of such domain gets indexed, can it compete with .com domains - or at least with .info domains.

Of course this domains are indexed, but like the info's domains it's hard to rank top 10 for a competitive term using this kind of domains.

i totally disagree with him. As i had a co.cc domain with top 3 in SERP's. But co.cc is a scam for me. I made my site popular with in 3 months and highest 3 months alexa rank was 27,000 then they played their game. They made that domain Premium and asked me to pay $150 if i want to use that domain further.

THEY ARE TOTALLY SCAM For My Case.

Hope This time you are Lucky. Good Luck with Co.cc

I'll take your advice. I guess I'll just invest on .com domains instead.

Yes they are, I wouldn't suggest using a free domain name to build a website, just buy a $2.00 .info domain name, at least you then have the rights over the domain, with a free domain they can cut off service at any time, redirect your domain to somewhere else, more or less stealing your traffic, they can easily do this without you even knowing.
