I just noticed that the site search on CNN switched from Google to Yahoo. Looks like some real competition among SE's now. My Yahoo and MSN results are comparable to Google for the first time in a long time. It used to be google provided 60% of traffic, Yahoo 20% and then there were the others. Now it's 30-30-30 between MSN, Yahoo, and Google with the last 10 being picked up by all the others like AOL, AskJeeves, etc. I never saw an announcement, but this is a major Coup for Yahoo. OK.. I'm a bozo. Apparently this happened in October or November. With the Holidays (and my newfound DP addiction) I haven't been reading the news as much.
The more Yahoo the better - I have much better rankings in Yahoo than Google and no time to work on improvement.
Google has let greed take over their actions here of late. Google forgot that the search and the results should be about the consumer. Because they have forgot this their results are terrible and MSN and Yahoo is converting those people that have left google. So MSN and Yahoo will continue to take traffic.
It's a different search engine world now... With Yahoo and MSN fighting hard, their really giving Google a nice fight... But kind of makes you think: "what is Google really working on right now" I'm sure we'll see a swift uppercut very soon....
I dont think they have anything in the works, I believe the engineers are all running around the googleplex wondering where they may have to go to find employement. Google got greedy its that simple and now they are paying for it. When you are # 1 you you develop a certain sense of noone can touch you attitude, google made this mistake and will now pay for it.
I see exactly where your coming from.... But if you think about it..... They struck ---------> when the iron was hot! Now there all filthy discusting rich.... But can you really blame them.... They worked terrible hard for many years for almost nothing, then they release adsence/adwords and their the most profitable company in the world (or atleast getting there) The BUZZ is hot on MSN and YAHOO - But Google has been the leader for so long because when it comes down to it - they are the more sophisticated engine... I like the results I see in Yahoo and MSN also - But I know why I see them.... Google is more aggressive at minipulating their technology and pagerank algorithm... In the long - it's gotta count for something... But only time will tell - everyone seems to have a little bit of anger towards Google.... But I guess it's just because their not doing what we want them to do..... Time will tell -
Yes they may be a more sophisticated engine as far as we know, but I believe that anyone could become that. The problem with making an engine more sophisticated is that you run the likelyhood of losing a lot of relevant results as google has. Lets also not forgot the main key here. Googles primary income is from adwrods, the less relevant their results the more adword income they generate, its a good business move but what got them to be number one was good natural relevant results. They have lost site of that and now will pay through the likes of MSN and Yahoo taking a very large market share away from them.
That may be so (I too rank well with MSN & Y!) but things tend to even out over the longer run. GG has implemented all of these penalty measures to filter spam. Many feel this has resulted in less relevant results. So, the other two major SEs pick up market share. But as they do, they will become larger and larger targets of spam. They too will have to devise better filters, which are likely to result in less relevant results. It’s a vicious cycle. /*tom*/
I noticed some referral from nfl.com/search over the past few day, went to check, and they are using overture results. This may have been the case all along, but with my #2-#6 fluctuating ranking at yahoo now, I just started noticing it.
I wouldn't worry about google too much. Google's algo is more complex and a less easy to manipulate. They're always changing the game. Some may see 33-33-33 across the board on their search terms, but when you think about it, does that just mean that you rank a little worse in google than in Y! and MSN? Google still has more people using their search, and for the most part, deliver better results than any other SE. It's just that we as web masters and researchers of SEs feel that if we can't "manipulate" the SERPs to our liking, we'll jump aboard any SE that gives us good results. Hell, I can shotgun just about any term on MSN within 5 days to the top 5. I don't think that means MSN is "better" than Google, I think it shows that MSN is very vulnerable. Yahoo is beginning to go the same route.
