Does anyone know where I can find a list of what CMS some of the larger news sites are using? (Those who are using a publically available CMS).

I'm not necessarily talking about free ones. There are a lot of solutions out there that cost 100's of thousands of dollars. For costs that high some big sites have to be using them :p

I'm guessing that the vast majority are custom built, I doubt any of the big guys use an off the shelf solution.

I know these aren't huge online magazines like AskMen or anything, but Mudsugar and Split Magazine are really nice ones using Wordpress.

I own a phpcow liscense and I must say it is great software once setup. Although getting the site to function the way you want it to can be very confusing. A little pricey, but if your worried about that I suggest you lease the hosted option for a monthly fee and see if you like it first..

I know one of the content networks I'm still with uses cmsms. That's how I was exposed to it, and now I'm building and transferring all of my sites to it.

Almost all of them have sef urls... if you are looking for a free one then try snews.. it comes with a creative commons license, comes with flat file & mysql versions & is a single file CMS. Skinning it is a breeze.. ps: there are many free skins out there for this script. The developers site is running on snews itself so you can get a demo there.
