I have a found a CMS that I am planning to use on my web design business. The
CMS is under the GPL licence. I know that since it is open source we can edit it etc. But would I be allowed to change the name of the product, it is called open source CMS would I be allowed to call it JXD design CMS and then provide my customers with it?

    Thanks. :)

My understanding of the GPL is that one may may derivative works as long as the orginal credits remain in place, the license and all source files are passed along. Since one of the license restrictions is that you clearly identify your work as a derivative to protect the reputation of the initial author, renaming certainly seems reasonable.

I see a lot of GPL products being modified, renamed and marketed. The creator credits are usually still in the scripts something like Quick CMS is based upon a modified version of XYZ CMS initially written by:

Of Course the GPL prevents you from licensing your new product under any license other than GPL. Nothing precludes your charging a fee for the work.

Ok thanks for that, so I should be able to rename it as long as I do not licence it?

So you want to take someone else's work and not acknowledge them for it? On top of that, you want to claim it as your own.

    Nice....

You also need to leave the copyright information within the scripts to acknowledge the author.

Also I suggest you not rely soley on my statement. Verify the information before you act on it.

Sorry if you are looking from the wrong angle, but I of course would leave a note saying who made it. It is just because in the Admin panel (where you write all your posts) there is a big sign at the top saying easy CMS, I would rather have my customers site name there just as to prevent any confusion.

I do not mean to take any responsibility for anyone else is work and I am sorry if I made you think that. Of course, that is why I am asking these questions. I am trying to follow their licence. .
