so I'm thinking of letting users store songs on my server, and let them listen to it from any pc or mobile device that has a web connection. I know that amazon is doing it. (but I'm not sure if that's legal since it is something new). so I was just wondering if this would be legal or not. users won't be able to share music, or let others listen to their songs. no one can access it but the user alone.
I'm not sure you're really serious about finding an answer to that question, or if you are, you're being intellectually lazy about the process. Here's why. This forum undoubtedly has a lot of very smart participants. Some even have formal legal training or are licensed to practice law in whatever jurisdiction they happen to be in. Assuming you're a reasonably smart individual -- how could you ever possibly base a decision to proceed with a project where the lingering question pertains to the legality of the project? Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to sound like a jerk or to be critical. And there's certainly nothing wrong with getting some initial "thoughts" from forum participants. But nothing anyone says here is a legitimate substitute for calling a local lawyer where you live an scheduling a 30 minute appointment to discuss your project and get a formal legal opinion. That's if your serious. Now, I understand how it goes sometimes where we get an idea and have some questions in the back of our mind about whether or not what we're considering is legal. In a case like that, if you have reservations, don't proceed. It's just not worth the hassles and aggravation of having to later deal with any problems that might arise. But if you are serious, get some guidance from a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction. It's money well spent! Good luck!
