close threads older than X days & let thread owners in BST close their own threads

because of this thread bumping thing going on here more and more, maybe it's usefull that thread longer than, say 100 days are automaticcaly closed.

for the BST forums, when someone has sold something or when a service is no longer available, it might be helpfull to be able to close your own thread. This keeps bumping away also..

today i saw someone replying for a one-time egold to paypal service which was 211 days old.............

If U are telling for the members then wrong.
It's the MODS workand they see this very well.

These type of threads should be closed down.

There Should be no automatic closing of all the threads after a certain period, some very few threads can be useful :)

i think BST should have the closed feature (or better no one can view the thread cause ppl can PM)

i always get pm for offer that expired for long time that i didn't even remeber it existed..

if something is sold, there is no point to leave it open

Some threads are timeless, very good and interesting and deserve a bump once in a while.

I'm with the Dutch guy on the BST closing. Though it should remain visible so Shawn can rake in the AdSense money via SERPs traffic :) (And then blow it on new servers again...)

Not sure on the closing of threads. What could work is like the 'cost' of negative feedback, the same -1 cost could apply to a thread older than N and without replies for more than X. If they really want to 'spend' their rep, they can open it up again.

Just thought of a variation on the BST closing, maybe it could only remain open for those who already posted in it, or those linked to it via iTrader. That way they have a good channel of communication with the seller whilst avoiding useless bumps.

    Sounds like over-moderation to me.

IMO that only becomes an issue when it's not automated (i.e. hard fact rules) but actually done by mods (for whatever motivation or criteria). We are lazy here and don't take on board anything if it can't be coded by our coding slave Shawn. Pretty much.

Except really old BST threads rarely get bumped (except link exchanges which don't get "sold")

How would closing the thread stop someone from PMing you, especially since they have obviously only read the first post?

would be best if you can allow the person who started the thread to close it after the deal is over and feedbacks were exchanged..

agree with the second proposal but not the first. like others have said, there's value in some old thread. (like critter's THANKS TO DP MEMBER'S thread)

okay maybe the first needs a slight adjustment... valuable threads keep getting posts all the time, other don't.

maybe it's better to close threads which not have been posted on for more than X days, instead of older than X days... (thanks for the idea tops30 :) ).

this isn't overmoderation, this is automating some things that moderators should do. exept the coding that will be involved once, this is time saving :)

Active on the BST forums, so I at times believe old threads there that are past their prime should be closed out for good. Or set so no more posting allowed.

But then, I got a few days ago some good business from someone who saw an old thread of mine. That site was sold months ago, but this person saw the thread and wanted me to build him a site just like it. So I did, made some money. Off an old thread no less!

So there is to me some good value on old posts in the BST.

Sometimes its best that the OP cant close down the thread.. Especially in the BST area..

Some feedback is usefull to keep around to value potential trading partners and when all the old sales threads are keept you have the option of checking out your buyer or seller before hand...

closing doesn't mean you can't view it anymore, it only means you can't POST anymore in that thread.

you can read feedback of that sale thread, but can't post in it
