If a website is cloaking(showing different content to users and search engines by detecting the user agent via php or asp) what do you think the chances are of google catching/banning the site?

Please only answers from those who know something about it, not those who are guessing

Depends on the competitiveness of your topic, the quality of your implementation, etc. There is no simple answer. If you are in for the long-term, the risk might be too high.
