A seller of online marketing tools said Wednesday it sued Google, charging that the Web search giant has failed to protect users of its advertising program from click fraud, costing them at least $5 million.

The article goes on to say that a Google spokesman says that the suit is without merit and that Google plans to defend itself. The article also says that it is estimated that 20% of all clicks are fraud.

I don't see how they could win but the exposure will be good regardless.

Just hearing that 20% of clicks may be fraud may tell a LOT of adwords users to drop their max ppc a lot, which would have to drop click worth for adsense a LOT.
And quite a lot of adword users may venture to other ppc engines. I know the article would make me hesitant to use googles adwords if I was used to spending a large budget on it, and I was a fairly new user.

This can do nothing but hurt adsense payouts even more

The problem right now is that serious advertisers are choosing to opt out of the content network. The only people showing their ads on websites are the newbies that pay 5 cents per click, that's why publisher's earnings are dropping like a rock.

Definately a publicity stunt, considering the type of company that is sueing them.

I advertise on adsense content sites, but that is because its so easy for me to track results and the costs per impression is so low.

I agree that it is pure plublicity. 38% is crazy.

Click fraud is inevitable human flaw. Even Google is looking for ways to squeeze extra bucks from their advertizements.

We talk on here now about the fear of getting banned from a couple accidental clicks on our own ads, with this suit started, it's definately going to get worse. Yikes.......

people use adwords because it converts. Why should they go to other ppc engines if google adwords traffic converts better?

I am interested to see how this whole thing unfolds and reading lots of threads to see what people think.

TOTALLY OT - bluegill_catcher - the main reason I posted is to say I love your avatar. Grew up bluegill fishing in the midwest and REALLY miss it. You gave me a fit of melancholy.

OK sorry, back to click fraud.

    excerpt
"A seller of online marketing tools said Wednesday it sued Google, charging that the Web search giant has failed to protect users of its advertising program from click fraud, costing them at least $5 million.

Click Defense filed its lawsuit, which also seeks class action status, Friday in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif. "

Pure joke. This is the kind of company that wants to built profit because google is making tons of money.

Let's face it. Google is probably reviving the net because of adsense. You now see ppl trying to built more quality content than before, and get generous ad payment because of that. That is something you do not see in say 5 years ago.

"Click Defense, which advertises on Google.com, is among a new crop of companies that aim to help identify and stop click fraud. Its rivals include Alchemist Media and ClickDetective."

Let's say they are just trying to make money .. as simple as that, and jeorpadizing the income of thousands of ppl who are thriving on adsense income.

For a company that aim to "identify and stop click frauds" they must know that click fraud is inevitable. Some ppl are honest, others are not. So the fact that they actually advertise in google shows their malicious intent.

    Bagero!

I use adwords to market an adult site, and I am pleased with the results! It definitely converts, and as of today, I just added it up, I am spending about $60 for about $700 in sales ($140 profit). I more than doubled my money! It varies from month to month, but overall, I am pleased with Adwords.

That statement is completely nonsense. All they do is an estimatation on their on their own behavior and thinking pattern.

My good guess is that the clickfraud damage is below an average shoplifting damage that would be something below 1.5 - 5% including clicks made by mistakes.

hm, i see a lot of sites comming up just made for adsense: write a small cms to display articles, place 2 skyscraper-ads left and right and a large adblock on top and place some content (c&p from article directories) about whatever below. i wouldnt call this "quality content". this kind of sites is annoying as doorway pages a few years ago.
