Most directories gives very little traffic. Start with classified ads directories. Directories brings little traffic, but they are free traffic and backlinks that will get your website indexed by google. Start early as some directories could take weeks or month to get approved. http://everydaybusinessonline.com/adsites.htm If you can, submit your directory to google DMOZ, this will bring you good amount of traffic, but it takes a long time (months) for them to review, and they are very stringent on accepting new entries. Other directories http://www.google.com/Top/Shopping/Classifieds/Free_Classifieds/ Also do a search for free classifieds directory and put your links there: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:*:IE-SearchBox&q=free+classifieds+directory I also advertise in other classified ads site, Craiglist, Kijiji, Backpages until they banned me. Domestic Sales, USfree ads also brings relevant links. Join some safelists, I send out on average 300k safelist emails a day, response rate is very low, but still, it's free advertising. If you can afford it, spend some money on adwords for "free classifieds" or "free classified ads", those convert best for me and helped me get started out, as people are afraid to join a brand new site. I get 20% traffic from other classified ads site, 60% from email campaigns, and 10% from google adwords, 10% from other sources. Conversion rate wise, google adword is 7% for me, classified ad site traffic is about 3%, email campaign 1% per email opened (maybe 1 out of over 1000 email sent gets opened, pending on the safelist), and other source I'd be lucky to get 0.1% (social networks, traffic exchanges).
