Most of the thinking is when linking if you are on the same class c ip range, Google may look harder to see if they are all your sites.

And of course if you are linking to yourself it is not natural, so Google may discount your links.

It is much more believable if the link comes from a complete different class c, that it is not your site linking to itself.

If I am a hosting company I would buy a block of IP's and then host until all the Ip's are used up and then and then buy another block.

With that said, unless you host with many different hosting companies, You will be on the same class c.

    Correct.

If you think it doesn't matter whether or not having multiple sites on the same C or same IP, perhaps you should refer to Google:

    http://code.google.com/apis/soapsearch/reference.html#2_3

When enabled, filtering takes the following actions:

    * Near-Duplicate Content Filter = If multiple search results contain identical titles and snippets, then only one of the documents is returned.
    * Host Crowding = If multiple results come from the same Web host, then only the first two are returned.

I can assure you, no surfer is going through the trouble to turn off that default filter.

Multiple hosts do not share the same C, unless you happen to use multiple reseller hosts that are hosted at the same place and were given the same IP blocks to pull from.

If you have multiple C's it will give the impression that you are hosted at multiple locations. You might want to make sure you use different nameservers as well.

Wrong. We have about 120 different C's available.

if you owned 10 sites - should you place them all on their own IP - or does it not matter?

Ask 10 pros get 10 different answers. Several things should be taken into account before answering your question.

    1. Is the IP that you are sharing among your 10 sites shared with anyone else, or is it dedicated to you only.

    2. Are you 10 sites of similar theme? Like are they 10 sites about cars, or are they about cars, apples, dogs, radios, and rocket ships?

    3. Do you plan on interlinking your 10 sites with each other?

Its ok to link sites together on the same IP, just don't go nuts with it. Maybe 6 or less is fine.
