I'm looking to set up an area guide with the following features:

    • needs to be customizable, preferably with the ability to work from a template. I want things on the main page set up a certain way
    • business directory (multi-level with free and paid listings)
    • forum
    • user submitted articles
    • user submitted news
    • user submitted events
    • classifieds
    • banner adds
    • featured listings (by category, i.e. I'd like to have on the main page 3 or 4 featured real estate listings and 3 or 4 featured businesses that I can charge for)
    • business search box on front page
    • ability to add information pages
    • ability to add Google Ads

I have almost no experience in any of this but have done a fair amount of research. I'm leaning towards eDirectory just because I haven't found anything as complete and because they offer a hosted lease option (but it's expensive and you have to pay extra for them to do any customizations). I really like the look of phpMyDirectory but some of the features I want just don't look possible. I've also looked at SepCity, but can't find much info on them although from their website it looks like I could probably get everything I need.

Anyone have any ideas or guidance they can give? It would be VERY much appreciated.

I have a similar site, my setup is Joomla CMS + Sobi2 (business directory) + Jevents (events) + I don't run classifieds but "AdsManager" should do it :D

Thanks, Joomla looks like it might work. Do you consider it easy to work with? I have pretty much no experience. I was going to go with something like eDirectory because it's all put together already but it's REALLY expensive and any customization is also expensive.

Yeah it's a good, free alternative to what you would like to accomplish and it's very customizable. There are many free joomla guides out there, but it is overall, an easy content management system to learn. Just familiarize yourself with how to add content and install and run the extensions (took me a week tops to learn the whole joomla backend) post any additional questions you have and I'll try my best to help ya out, good luck :)
