Christmas shopping for the less fortunate!

Well my wife and I spent our weekend out with another local business owner and his wife buying clothes and toys for some needy families. You never realize just how much work this can be. I mean I have always donated money or random toys, but this was the first time I actually had a list with requests... Santa has really got a thankless job.

Some things are hard to find so you end up getting inventive. One family we bought for had 5 kids and one more on the way... It was almost impossible to keep things straight. I spent part of tonight and will spend the rest of my day tomorrow doing the wrapping.

If you ever get an opportunity to do this, here is what we did. Hopefully this will make your charitable gift giving a bit easier in the future.

We had a budget of $100 per child. $75 on clothing, and $25 on toys. We went to Kohls power seller sales night. This saved some extra money off the already over and under inflated, sale prices. Also, for ever $50 we spent we got 10 bucks back in Kohls cash which we were able to re-use to buy more toys and clothes.

Make sure you have your wife/girlfriend with you, a women anyway.. They really know what is in style and are great when it comes to finding outfits that look like they cost a fortune, but were actually pretty inexpensive. It also helps if you have kids of your own when it comes to knowing things like sizes, and toys that are in and cool....

We had 7 families to buy for, so we were armed with two carts a piece and were completely exhausted afterwards..

It's nice knowing that these kids are gonna have a really Merry Christms, and it really feels much better doing more than just buying toys randomly, or donating money to an organization and trusting they will use the money wisely.

I know the names and ages of every kid we bought for. It really makes things feel a bit more personal knowing the people you will be helping. They will never know me or my wife, as we will not be the ones delivering the gifts, and I think that makes it all the more perfect!

How do you find people to buy gifts for? Go to your local school district office and ask. They have social workers that find needy families, then they give them list sheets to fill out their kids names, sex, age, and sizes, as well as ideas on what to get. The school district will give you these sheets and then you go out and buy whats on their lists to the best of your ability. From there these gifts end up back at the social workers offices or an organization like the Jaycee's, Lions Club, etc., where members will deliver the gifts in time for Christmas.

There's still plenty of time to do this, so if you have the time to spare and want to make some kids Christmas bright, get out there and do it.

    Good luck!
