Choosing the right domain

OK, I made this mistake with my current website selling consumer electronics.
I chose a domain name (which is my username actually) and I think its making things harder for me to rank good on search engines, because its the name of my shop and has nothing to do with the content of my site.

Any advice on choosing the right domain and is it ok to have a .org or .us or .info etc... ?

Steps to choose the right domain for your website:

    Step 1:
Write down the name of your business. Remembering that short and sweet domain names are the easiest to remember, create a list of possible names using your business name (for example, smithauto.com, smauto.com, smitheys.com).

    Step 2:
Create a list of services your business provides and a list of possible names from those services (for example, autorepair.com, fixcar.com, brokedown.com).

    Step 3:
Use catchphrases from your brochure and other promotional materials to create additional possibilities.

    Step 4:
For personal domain names, use your name, your pet's name, your hobbies, your surname or even your child's name.

    Step 5:
Visit the Whois Web site (www.whois.org). Using Whois, you can type in your favorite picks and see if they're taken and by whom. If they are taken, keep trying with your alternate choices.

    Step 6:
Use other organizational suffixes, such as .net or .org, if the .com name is taken. However, since users randomly searching for your site may be directed to the .com site first, .net and .org names are usually best for personal rather than business domain names.

    Step 7:
If you're really set on using a domain name that has been taken, contact the owner of that domain name by checking the Administrative Contact section on the Whois site. Domain-name owners sometimes sell domain names they don't use.

    All the best.......

    I agree with Roger_Silvester...

On my latest blog, I used Micro Niche Finder to find the best keywords related to my blog. The keywords with the most traffic, and very little competition. Then, I used exactly the same keywords for my domain.

A domain name shouldn't stop you from ranking well in search engines. Any domain can rank for any keyword as long as the content and links relate to that keyword. For example look at ezinearticles, they have topics on a range of subjects and they rank well for them.

.com is always the best for a business website as it is brandable and its known worldwide. However if your business is country specific then your country extension may be the better option.
