If the top site has 30,000 backlinks and the number 10 site has 10,000 links page one is going to be tough. But if the top site has 200 backlinks and the 10th site has 50 backlinks you have a real shot at getting in the upper portion.

As they all said look for something with a high search rate but low competition it shows to you that there's a high demand and low competition since not many will have picked up it's got a demand on it yet.
Using high search levels to low competition is great but no matter what you do you have to keep testing to see what works for you. Also, see what your competitors are doing. That can always give to a direction to head.
