Choosing a URL like another

I have a site that's been lying around for a year or two [because I decided to ignore it], and I would have expected by this time that Google and others would know about more than the first page. I have free hosted web sites that get better search results. Admitedly, I have done nothing much to push it or market it until now and no one links to it, but I have other sites that no one links to that search well in Google.

I'm wondering if it's because the URL is similar to an existing one which covers similar topics.

My url is something like aaaaa-bbbb.net and the exsiting one is aaaabbb.net. Is there any possibility that having a similar URL puts me at a disadvantage?

    I doubt it.

Why don't you submit the site to DMOZ and see what happens?

URL name would have nothing to do with it. You can make a site with the name digital-point.com and it would be fine. Unless of course you copied this site then the owner may get mad.

But do the same sites have the same content? You said they were similiar just wonder how alike they are.
