Choosing a topic to blog about

When choosing a topic to blog about is it important to keep the topic fairly small for SEO purposes? For example, if you wanted to start a blog about pets, would it be best to choose one area, such as dogs, rather than pets as a whole?

If choosing a wide topic such as pets can the blog still be optimised for the different chategories such as dogs, cats, etc. like a normal website could be? Or is this more difficult with a blog?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Choose a topic you are comfortable with. Of course you can write about the bigger picture rather than the main topic.

Choose something you like, otherwise it will be hard to create content etc.

My opinion is that individual pages need to be focused so you can optimize for keywords, but the entire blog need not be focused.

Thanks for your responses. Yes I will be writing about something that i am interested in. Just not sure whether to write about the topic as a whole (which I would obviously have more to write about) or narrow it down to a more specific area.

Of course if you chose one topic only, you can focus better on that and have less to think when optimizing it, instead of trying to do all at once, writing on more topics, optimizing more topics...and curing your head ache ;)
