Hello, I was wondering what might be a good approach when trying to name a directory. One idea that I had was to use "MOZ" at the end of the directory name (got the idea from chezmoz.com ). For example let's say that my niche has to do with soap, would it be a good idea to name it soapmoz.com? or would it be better to name it "thesoapdirectory.com"? Do you have any tips for picking names for a directory? And, from your personal experience, does the success of your directory depend on the name (domain) you choose for it? thanks, Daniel
I would stay away from anything -moz. Just because I see so many variations on the Dmoz name, you would just be jumping on the bandwagon and it wouldn't be too memorable. I can't really say that my directory has done better or worse due to its name, there are so many other variables out there. But looking at the names of the biggest directories, it seems like the best approach is to go for short and memorable: JoeAnt, GoGuides, Jayde, Zeal, and Dmoz. I'm trying to come up with a new directory name myself, and inspiration isn't striking (or maybe I'm just too fussy). I want short and memorable, rather than something with a bunch of obvious keywords in it. It's an entertainment directory, and the only name that's come close has been "Hooferdoofer", which I have already discarded because not enough people know what it refers to (it's the remote control), and it's hard to spell.
Thanks for your reply Obelia, I get what you are saying and I think it is so true, because "soapmoz.com" might make a lot of sense to me because I stand from a webmaster point of view but to a normal person who just makes soap and his website contains only contact numbers it will be nothing short of illogical. Thanks for the advice, from now on I'll try to stay short and catchy (even though if it's niche-specific I might try to include some keyword, like: gosoap.com, soapstop.com )!
In my opinion just think of something short, Catchy, and relative to what your diretory is about Good Luck!
