When buying a domain for your directory do you find that you only purchase a .info when the .com is already taken or do you buy a .info instead because their cheaper?

If you have $8 to spend I'd really go for the .com

i will take the .com only, people don't remember the other extentions, they will go to the .com first!!
the .com domain get a higher place in the search engines[wild guess:rolleyes: ]

but the most important thing is, .com domains have a better resale value!!:D

I agree Jochen, after just finding out that the $0.99 .info's at godaddy are renewable at the regular price they seem less tempting.

Il go for the .com where available.

...good point - worth bearing in mind the renewal costs when buying cheap domains.

For a directory I'd always go for a .com

Thanks bochgoch, im glad i checked this out before being lured in by the purchase of cheap .info domains, naturally it seemed tempting at first to go mad and buy a load of .info's

    Thanks guys

webcrawler, the com and .net only, thanks, il definately take .net into consideration as an alteranative when .com is not available.

If you would like to business(will make paid directory) through your directory then better to go with .COM
As (.com) means commercial and (.info) means information based not basically for business.

I personally and many others will not buy a domain for a new site if one of the top ext. are taken. If SEODirectory.com is taken and .info is avail, I won't buy the .info. I don't think getting a .info if someone has an already great site on .com is fair, but then there are other opinions.

Yes i plan to have featured links etc on directories so yes, your spot on, another good reason to choose .com for them, thanks wildstone.

SasaVtec i agree, its most likely a better idea to choose a different name and get the .com of it rather than settle for the .info etc, either through it not being available or cheapness.

If I am serious with my directory I would not care about $8

You just dont buy a domain because its cheaper. .com has more value IMO in the end.

Alvin, your right, at first i had looked into using .info because of the cheap purchasing price, but as you say, if your serious about a directory or other sites then its worth that $8 or similar price to buy the .com

Well considering target customers are webmasters, .info is associated with "cheapness" so it'd be percepted as you don't even want to spend an extra $6 for your directory, how much would you spend for it's backlinks so i shall buy a link from that site.. :)

Depends on domain name and not extension or how cheaper it is.

If you can get the COM go ahead, but sometimes the INFO is more suitable, in exmple directory.info sounds better than directory.com and gives your audience an overview on your site's content.

I would get a .com domain if possible. Otherwise a .net, .org or .info would do.
