The Chinese government has warned that relations with Norway could suffer should a Chinese dissident be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2010. Deputy Foreign Minister Fu Ying conveyed that message during a visit to Norway earlier this year, Nobel Institute director Geir Lundestad told Norwegian broadcaster NPK. The institute assists the five member Nobel Committee in selecting the winner. This year's prize is to be announced October 8. A handful of Chinese dissidents, including imprisoned Chinese human rights activist Liu Xiaobo, AIDS activist Hu Jia, and human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, are believed to be among the record 237 nominees this year. Lundestad has earlier mentioned similar signals from other Chinese officials, noting however that the Nobel Committee did not shy away from awarding the 1989 peace prize to Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
The Chinese governess and most of their leaders would do a wonderful thing if they all gathered in one placed and nuked themselves . Then the Chinese people would be free from this plague .
ya ya wat ever, chinese are the present day dictators, if u arrest their ship captain, all trade relations would be blocked and improper arrests would be made, wat ever, no one should respect Dalai Lama, wat not...
I thought the Chinese would show more restraint than this. Maybe they are taking up the position of "policeman of the world" now ? By the way, do you have a link ?
I see, the Tiananmen Ghost rises again... Quote : "Before his latest sentence, Liu, a former university professor, also spent 20 months in jail for joining the 1989 student-led protests in Tiananmen Square"
What relations are those? The Chinese are going to refuse to export flip-flops and fireworks to Norway?
This just in : Liu Xiaobo received the Nobel peace prize . Lets see how China will foam their communist mouth Also this is the 1st Chinese citizen that ever won a Nobel Prize .
Those who will give up liberty for security deserve none and will lose both . Also the guy is in prison and the police has surrounded his wifes house .
That was a ham-handed way to go about it. The Nobel committee may not always be the brightest bunch, but nobody likes to be threatened and they know there's little China can do to Norway. The Chinese gov guys that made that faux pas pretty well assured the final outcome.
