Back when slavery existed, Cherokee indians had slaves as well. After the Civil War, a treaty was signed to grant the slaves (and descendants) tribal citizenship. They're known as the "Cherokee Freedmen." But, ...
One might wonder why the "Cherokee Freedmen" would want to be "Cherokee citizens" but if that is their feelings then it should be their right. The receiving benefits may be more the issue than the voting - just a guess.
I guess they have been citizens, basically, since the treaty in 1866. But, they started trying to take their citizenship away from the early 1980's.
LoL. How astute of you! No free money from tribe operated casinos, no participation in the millions of dollars in gubment money passed down as "reparations" . Try and look at the bright side. Now that they are off the dole, they might just get a sense of self esteem and make a success out of themselves, compared to the poverty most on the reservations live in.
Your Morals are impeccable and should be applied to all emancipated African Americans - needing for yourself is the true testament.
