You really need a search box on the first page.

Yeah, even I thought so..but the "address bar" acts as a Search Box, you need to do it through that.

It only works if the address bar contains a query.

I agree. It isn't very user-friendly without it.

Yeah, the address bar shouldn't change... now you get a scary url after entering the word

    http://dnary.com/?q=define%3A/car&client=pub-0651444548007582&forid=1&ie=ISO-8859-1&oe=ISO-8859-1&cof=GALT%3A%23676767%3BGL%3A1%3BDIV%3A%23FFFFFF%3BVLC%3A676767%3BAH%3Acenter%3BBGC%3AFFFFFF%3BLBGC%3A336699%3BALC%3A555555%3BLC%3A555555%3BT%3A676767%3BGFNT%3A676767%3BGIMP%3A676767%3BFORID%3A11&hl=en

    Code (markup):
It's not a wise ideea to make the user move its attention from the page back to the address bar, click on it (click again to remove the automatic selection in a few browsers) and type the word... it's too much work.

Maybe you need to add more query options for search.

    /?q=_&q1=_&q2=_

Add a selection form might be helpful.
