check for original content

    i am new to this, could anyone please tell me how can one check if the content written by someone is original or copied?

    i would appriciate if i can get some one or some site offering this service for free.

    I heard there are some software that will do this for you, instead of paying copyscape.

    Dont know where to find it though :(
