Cheapest Way to Make A Video SITE?

Are there any open source resources out there to create a video site (kind of like youtube)?

Mainly what I want is to customize the scripts and make an original site. If this is impossible, then there are two choices:

    1. Buy an existing script
    2. Hire a coder

    (are there any alternatives?)

Main thing is: video sites seem like an expensive and risky business to get into, so I want to know what is a cheap way to start out (so you don't risk losing hundreds, or thousands of dollars)

Second: is there anyway to make sure your video sites are efficient and dont use up too much bandwidth (to lower your web hosting bill)?

    Thanks guys.

Those kinds of sites are very expensive to run. you would need a good budget and some good amount of servers, also you need to advertise

If you get big expect to spend thousands of dollars on hosting and remember that your ads might not even cover your hosting expenses.

Well I know of Alstrasoft's Video Share Enterprise script. It runs like a Youtube-style video site, if that's what you're looking for.

Even the largest are loosing money, bandwidth is the big issue, maybe a site that pulls videos from other sites is an alternative - but again this is a saturated market .... I would try something else honestly.

well, the site would be a paid site for members who are willing to spend maybe $1 for each video they watch, so I would not be losing as much money as most video sites.

I assume if youtube charged 1$ per video, it would be pretty rich.

Again it's tricky, if you choose to charge for videos then they have to be unique and worth the money, as visitors will just search the billion other videos that are available and if you're talking about adult videos - then you have to consider the 1000s of adult sites that only charge $10+ for a months membership and that's unlimited videos and of a high quality.

The videos are for a very specific niche (not adult) and posses very valuable information.

I have no doubt that people will pay for them mainly because I work in this niche and understand what I am dealing with here.

What I don't understand is all this webstuff. The more I read about video sites, the more confused I get :p
